What Is an Attar?

An attar (also spelled ittar) is a natural perfume oil derived from botanical sources — flowers, herbs, spices, woods, and resins — through a process of steam or hydro-distillation. Unlike modern synthetic fragrances, attars contain no alcohol and no artificial chemicals. They are pure, concentrated, and deeply personal — a fragrance that evolves with your body's warmth and chemistry.

The Art of Hydro-Distillation

At Raahi Parfums, we use the traditional method of hydro-distillation — the same technique practiced in Kannauj for centuries. Here's how it works:

• Fresh botanical material (flowers, roots, bark, or resin) is placed in a copper deg with water.
• The deg is sealed and heated over a wood fire. Steam rises, carrying the volatile aromatic compounds with it.
• This steam passes through a bamboo pipe (chonga) into a copper receiver (bhapka) submerged in cool water.
• As the steam condenses, the essential oil separates and is collected — often into a base of pure sandalwood oil, which acts as a natural fixative.

This process is slow, labour-intensive, and requires extraordinary skill. A single batch of Rose Attar, for instance, can take days and require hundreds of kilograms of fresh petals to yield just a few millilitres of oil. But the result is incomparable — a living, breathing fragrance that no synthetic can replicate.

From Field to Flacon: Our Botanical Sources

The quality of an attar begins long before distillation — it begins at the source. We are meticulous about where and how our raw materials are grown and harvested.

• Kewra (Pandanus): Sourced from Agraharam in the Ganjam District of Odisha, where the flowers grow naturally along the coast. Kewra is distilled on-site immediately after harvest to preserve its delicate, honeyed character.
• Rose Petals: Sourced from Hathras District in Uttar Pradesh, renowned for its Damask roses. Like Kewra, rose petals are distilled at the point of cultivation — their fragrance is too fleeting to survive transport.
• Spices, Herbs & Resins: Ingredients like vetiver, saffron, oud, and various resins are sourced from across India and distilled in Kannauj, where our master perfumers blend them into complex, layered compositions.

This farm-to-flacon approach ensures that every drop of Raahi attar carries the full integrity of its botanical origin.
